What is Physical Therapy?
According to American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Physical Therapy is:
“Physical therapists are health care professionals who maintain, restore, and improve movement, activity, and health enabling an individual to have optimal functioning and quality of life, while ensuring patient safety and applying evidence to provide efficient and effective care.”
When Is Physical Therapy Needed?
Doctors often recommend physical therapy for patients who have been injured or have movement problems from an injury, illness, disease, or Physical Therapy (PT) may be needed any time a patient has difficulty moving in such a way that it limits daily activities.
Physical Therapy is often offered for the following conditions:
-chronic/Acute Pain Management
-head injury
-Neck Pain
-Whiplash Injuries
-Back Pain
-musculo-skeletal conditions
-orthopedics problems
-Hip Replacement Surgery
-Knee Replacement surgery
-Postural Disorders
-Sprains
-sports-Related injuries
-strokes
-Tendonitis
Physical therapists might guide patients through:
-gate training and balance
-weightlifting to build strength around an injury
-flexibility exercises to increase range of motion
-balance and coordination activities
-adaptive activities
-safety and prevention programs
-instruction on how to avoid injuries
-improving circulation around injuries by using heat, cold,exercise, electrical stimulation, massage, and ultrasound
During a visit, a physical therapist may:
-measure the client's flexibility and strength
-analyze the way the client walks and runs (a person's gait)
-identify potential and existing problems
-consult with other medical providers about an individual education plan and progress
-provide instructions for home exercise programs
-recommend when returning to sports is safe
